Way back when a wife was considered the "Property" of the man (husband or master) she had to obey what was told her or she would be severely punished up to and including death. Often the husband would loan a wife to a friend visiting in the home. When the friend left the wife was returned to the husband along with any children born as they were the property of the master. Often the master had several wives or even concubines. The wife considered it an honour to be chosen to provide sexual enjoyment of the friend of her husband. This was not considered adultery. A Biblical reference to this is in Exodus 21:4.
Today, a woman (wife) is not considered the property of the husband. Often today in strong marriages the husband and wife are non-monogamous and the husband "shares" his wife with other men friends. This can be done in several different ways including polyamory and swinging. Sometimes a husband does it the old fashion way and loans or shares his wife. Again this is not adultery.
