They do it to get MORE attention from the girl and to have an excuse to talk to you. Sometimes they don't even want to admit that they like you because, maybe they are shy or something. Or they are scared that you will say no if they asked. Or, they are insecure about themselves. Why don't you try to show him you like him back. But, in a way some people just think it was pointless flirting. But, do it to where he know's it's not pointless flirting and that you guys can actually go somewhere and get to know each other more.(: Just try something. And, if it doesn't work out the first time. Don't go back. You can never see what lies in your future if your always looking in the review mirror!!!!
