Well if he likes you likes you, he will probably get more touchy, and hang out in private or just hang out with you more. But if he just likes you like a friend he will act more conservatively than your girl friends!

But I would say go for it, if he's single and you've talked to him before and you guys have things in common, then I would just ask him, or maybe give him your number. My 11 year old step son has one of his friends talk to the girl and see if she fancies him, I suppose you could do the same.  That is a tricky age (hopefully he is about the same age) as you are just really discovering the opposite sex.  Try flirting with him, see if he will help you with things, play games with him or put yourself around him to see how he acts towards you.  Chances are good, at that age, that if he really acts like he doesn't like (like pushing you away and being mean) he likes you quite a bit.
 
Unfortunately the best answer really is talk to him.  But if you want to spare your feelings be around him and see how he acts.  If it is just the two of you he will likely act a lot different than he will if he is around friends.  If that is the case then you know he does, if he acts the same all of the time, then he may not.

I would say just to start getting to know him better. Invite a few friends over, and include him. This way, it won;t seem as awkward. Keep hanging out with him in a group. After a while, if it seems like the two of you get along, and you both enjoy spending time with each other, maybe you two could hang out by yourselves. Invite him to go to a game or a show that you both will enjoy. He will begin to realize that the two of you have a lot in common, and how cool it is to be around you. If your of legal age, why don't you break the ice and ask him if he wants to go out and have a couple drinks? Since you guys are already friends, that shouldn't feel uncomfortable. Maybe that would loosen you both up a little and you could open up to him about your feelings. If your not of legal age, suggest going to grab a bite to eat or something. He is never going to find out your feelings unless you tell him. You could be letting a good thing pass you by. If he is a true friend, you expressing your personal feelings for him should not get in the way.
