Why Is The Lone Ranger Called 'Lone' If He Always Has His Indian Friend Tonto With Him?

The background is that he was part of a group of Texas Rangers who were ambushed by outlaws.
They were all killed except one (I believe his last name was Reid). He was found and nursed back to health by an indian named Tonto. Since he was the lone surviving ranger, he thus is referred to as the Lone Ranger.
