I don't think that any American, whether their ancestors owned slaves or not, should feel guilty about what happened then. That would be like saying that people with German heritage should feel guilty about the holocaust or Christians should feel guilty about the atrocities of the middle ages. Throughout human history, mankind has used slaves. This includes all races and some religions. I will agree that what was done was cruel and wrong, but to keep trying to throw in the faces of people today is also wrong. The past is just that. The only way to recover from it is to acknowledge the facts, correct them and move on.
I don't think anyone should have to feel guilty for what their ancestors had done, unless they are doing it also. My father's mother's family is from Ireland (erin go bragh!) so i dunno if our family is fallen behind the ancestry of slavery. If it was, i would be not only mortified but shamed as well. Just thinking of how people treated others because of a simple thing as skin color. My daughter's father is Mexican. but not even my father will discriminate against him. Why? Because that man has fathered his first grandchild. (and my father is very racist) America should only feel guilty for the things they let other people do that is as cruel as slavery.
No. Simply because it is a huge blemish on the reputations of all Americans whom disagree with the notion of one having to serve another because they have a God given tan!!!♥Nassy
There own people sold them to the settlers, and my grandfather fought for their freedom and equality.
