Do a better job understanding his mental illness . . . Help him to obtain counseling and possibly get him medication that will level off what might be a chemical imbalance.

Long distance relationship and a person that suffers from depression is a challenging mix, to say the least. Hopefully, he's not a person that is prone to jealousy because that would be bad all the way around. I've included a link of things that you should encourage him to try and help get his depression under control. As always, should he threaten to hurt himself, err on the side of caution and call 911.

In addition, should you find his behavior something that is not getting better and you want to break up, don't let him threaten suicide in order to get you to stay.

You know him better than we do - what are some things he enjoys? Cards, letters, flowers, gift cards, an unexpected visit from you, etc.? You can always ask him for what helps him feel better and see what kinds of suggestions you get.

If you feel his depression is worse, encourage him to see a doctor. There might be a medical reason (thyroid problem, for instance). A low dose of an anti-depressant might also help. Good luck.

Ugh darling, you just need to remember that love finds its way. No matter how hard you try, if its not for you, its not for you. BUT, your hard work won't betray you. Unfortunately you cannot do much coz only him who can change his depression. Asked him trigger question like "Do you remember our first date?" "Do you remember our first photo together?" If he's still not sure, ask him this at the end "When we break up, are you gonna be more depressed?" Good luck!
