Extended family means family that are not of direct blood line but are separated by different generations of the same family origin.
There are many advantages and disadvantages of having extended family. Many people who have extended families find that it can be a positive experience with everyone being able to support one another through a crisis, such as the death of one of the family members or the one of the family members losing their job. Here all of the extended family can work together to support each other until a new job can be found. Also many people who live with their extended family find a stronger feeling of security having so much family around, allowing them to know that there is always someone they can turn to if they are in need of help and support. Extended family can also give off the feeling of belonging, as you can see all the people who have link to you through origin, giving people a better feeling of belonging as well as being part of something bigger than just themselves. Another benefit of living with extended family is that due to there may being several generations of one family living under the same roof, there are plenty of role models for the children of the house hold to look up to and learn from, with many elder family members being able to pass down certain traditions to the younger members.
However having extended family does have its disadvantages, for example those that live in the same house as their extended family, can have increased of costs for basic things such as gas and water bills as well as food, which is fine if everyone in the house hold is working however if some are not then it can be difficult to afford it. Also a downside of extended family can be if there is a fall out, generally with small families if there is fallout it is much easier to make up and forget about the problem. But in large extended families different members can take longer to forgive and arguments can be reignited very easily.
