The two lines on a guy's hips that go down are called the inseam. It is commonly defined as the seam inner leg of the pants and is likewise known as the extent of the seam.

It is the length of pants or jeans which are measured from the crotch to the end of the pants or jeans, or near the ankle. It is important that the inseams are measured to fit the pants comfortably and perfectly on the guy. Typical measurement is about 32 to 33 inches. The inseam holds the pants together to give the perfect fit and as such, it is important to stand up straight when your inseams are being measured.

The inseam can be measured in two ways:

Measuring a guy's inseam personally
  • Ask someone to measure your own inseam.
  • Stand up straight in your usual and comfortable position.
  • It is advisable to have your shoes on when your inseam is being measured.
  • Your right leg will be measured from the inner leg and the underside of the crotch down to the ankle. This is usually called the top inseam and lowest inseam points.
  • You can tell the person measuring your inseam the length of your preferred hem.
  • Don't forget to write the measurement.
  • Repeat it on the left leg.
Measuring the inseam using a pair of pants
  • Look for pants that fit you well. The pants should fit your waist and the desired length. Do not use pants which are loose in the waist because they will hang lower on your body and will make the measurement erroneous.
  • Put down the pants with the right side on the table and smoothen it.
  • Raise the left leg out of the way and place the tape measure from the crotch to the base of the right hem.
  • Write down the measurement.
  • Do the same on the left leg.
