Sounds confusing. So he's protective over you like what? Around other guys? But then he flirts with your BEST FRIEND? Sounds like a bit of a loser to me (sorry), but you should just do what your head tells you to do. If you think it will work out and he will be loyal and stuff, then cool, but it sounds like he's the kind of guy that cannot be trusted.
