That is normal. Of course you'd feel awkward; you do like him after all! What you should do is try to imagine himself as a regular friend and not like the guy that you like. That way he'll be easier to talk to. Plus if he's already your friend, he already likes you as you are now (as a friend or otherwise) so don't worry about messing up or doing something stupid. Just be yourself because that's the way he knows and likes you. Talk to him whenever you can about him and about yourself so you get to know each other and don't really care about looking silly because if he's your friend, he should already know a bit about you by now. But also keep in mind that you need to flirt with him a little bit and show that you're interested just so then he could get the picture.
And trust me, being awkward doesn't end there. It's still awkward in the beginning of dating too. But what you have to keep in mind is that you are you and that's all you can ever be. And if that so happens to be awkward, then so be it! If he gets turned off just because you're awkward, then you know that he isn't worth it.
