An Arabic marriage is known as a nikah, which is seen as a contract amongst the bride and bridegroom which is a component of Islamic marriage, is a strongly preached covenant as per the holy book of Islam, the Qur'an.

In fact, the Nikah, which is the initial stage of the marriage ceremony, is the signing of the marriage contract by the bride and the bridegroom.

Conventions as to the performance of the Nikah differ widely owing to the acceptance of different authoritative texts by different groups of people. Hence, the Sunnis will probably refer to the Bukhary Hadith while the Shia will have their own set of beliefs. A Nikah generally permits both the participating parties to put forth any clauses that they may want included. Islam does permit divorce hence this contract is seen as revocable.

A marriage which is not officiated and is unknown to the public is called as the nikah urfi.
