Luan, or Lauan, board is a type of wood that is also referred to as luan mahogany. It is not, however, mahogany, nor are the two of equal quality. It is a thin layer of plywood veneer made from tropical wood. Plywood is a wood panel made of thin layers of wood veneer glued together, but Luan typically has a solid core of wood between two layers of veneer, though the solid core may have problems with voids and dry spots in the glue of the veneer. It tends to be softer and lighter than most plywood. It is made from wood in the Shorea genus and is native to Southeast Asia. Luan generally comes in sheets that are 4 feet by 8 feet and come in thicknesses of 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, and 5.5 mm. It is often used as paneling indoors and as a furniture veneer. It can also be used as an underlayment, but should be put over an existing resilient floor. This provides the advantage of having a clean substrate to build on. It is prone to crushing and warping, so should not be used in areas with high moisture or that will contain heavy furniture. In general Luan plywood is less expensive than other types of plywood, but is not as sturdy either.
Luan wood has also been used in a number of computer role-playing games. In Wonderland online, for instance, you can get Lauan wood from The Woods in Kelan Village. If you get Lauan, you can turn it into Lauan by cutting it with a stone knife. In the game Infinite Undiscovery Lauan Wood is a common wood used in item creation. You can buy it at the Sapran in the inn once you have escorted the refugees there, from Faina, whom you encounter throughout the game, and at Port Zala. You can also get it from the Harpy’s on the Luce Plains.
