The term "tainted love" is used to describe a love that, for one reason or another, is spoiled or complicated by matters outside of one's control.

Typically, if someone uses the phrase "tainted love," they are saying that the wonderful feeling that accompanies love has been reduced - not enough to stop the love altogether, but enough to taint (or affect) it.

Love can be "tainted" in a number of ways, including:

  • Saying something in the heat of an argument and not being able to take it back
  • Finding out that your partner's family hate you and don't want you to be married
  • Sleeping with somebody else while the relationship is on a break
In all these situations, both parties can still love each other just as much as before,  but the warm-and-fuzzy romantic feeling has been ruined a little.

The Song Tainted Love Tainted Love is a famous song that was first recorded by Gloria Jones in 1965. It was made world-famous by Soft Cell in 1981. The following artists have also covered Tainted Love:
  • Marilyn Manson
  • The Pussycat Dolls
  • The Pigeon Detectives
  • Coil
  • Milk, Inc.
