In the Philippines, Mothers' Day, also known as Mothering Sunday, is celebrated on the same day as it is in the United States of America. It always takes place on the second Sunday in the month of May. This is quite a different tradition to the celebration of Mothers' Day in the United Kingdom, in which country it is held on the fourth Sunday of the Christian season of Lent.

In the Philippines, mothers are often referred to as the "light of the household", because they are central to all the activity which takes place within the family home and in taking care of the family unit. Modern Filipino mothers play a dominant role within the family, and can even be responsible for arranging marriages between children. While it is usually the husband in the family who is in employment, it is the wife and mother who sets the family budget and supervises and maintains the family's spending. In rural areas, mothers can even be solely responsible for educating their children. Because Filipino mothers are charged with such a high level of responsibility, they are therefore are celebrated accordingly.

Unlike tradition in western countries like America and Britain, Mothers' Day in the Philippines is not about spending a great deal of money on presents, flowers and cards. Instead, it is about showing respect and admiration for mothers in a dignified way. Handmade presents and cards are valued just as much, if not more, than store-bought ones, as they show care and attention. Children generally allow their mothers to take time out to relax, taking on household chores such as washing up and cooking which their mother would usually undertake.

In 2011, Mothers' Day in the Philippines was on Sunday the 8th of May. In 2012, Mothers' Day in the Philippines will be celebrated on Sunday the 13th of May.
