I don't think they would have been sent away when I was in school.  Sadly, they were just ostracized until they wanted to leave on their own.

I think that I can explain this..

So being transgender is not a mental illness, but gender dysphoria (the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex) is and can be solved by changing to fit the gender that they feel.

Transgender people can feel extremely depressed when looking at themselves and seeing a different body than they feel inside or being forced to use a different bathroom or locker space than the gender that they feel they are. This depression has such a high impact on theirselves that they go through expensive medical procedures to cure their dysphoria. When we pass laws like the bathroom law we have a huge negative impact on these people's mental health.

I am guessing you have never talked to someone who is transgender.  You are a guy who has always known and felt you were a guy. You have never looked at a woman and thought "I want to be her." It is more than just being gay. It is more than looking at someone of the same gender and being attracted to them. It is wanting to be able to be the opposite sex.

No, it is not a mental illness. It's much like love, why do you love a specific person? Because you do. Well, why do you feel like a certain gender? Because you do. That person doesn't have to love you for you to love them, do they? No, well you don't have to be a certain sex to be that gender.

According to a story on NPR ... It takes 6 months for a professional to diagnose somebody's "gender identity".

Personally, I don't understand it all, either.
What IS a "gender identity", other than what genitals you have?

NPR had a story the other day interviewing transgender individuals from South Korea ... Which, it sounded like, has 3 gender terms (at least).  Unfortunately, my car antenna broke and I couldn't hear the whole story.

Definitely not mental illness it's a choice that they just want to change their gender to the opposite gender and it's just a choice.

IMO Changing your sex to the opposite sex is not mental illness.

I've had reason to give this a lot of thought over the past 25 years. My opinion, if it's worth anything at all, is that it's a gender identity disorder. It's very confusing for the individuals who are so afflicted and invariably results in discrimination and vilification. It's not a way of life anybody would choose.

But there's as corollary to that.

Since the Internet has opened up all kinds of discussion, and because teens lack experience and knowledge to temper their precocity, a lot of kids think they're transsexual when in fact they may really be gay or even straight. It has become a meme.

It's gotta be disconcerting for them but I doubt that more than a tiny percentage of those claiming gender identity confusion really qualify.

I agree with your summary of teens. They are confused enough and don't have the life experience or maturity to really make a rational decision.

It's just the way things go, Ancient One. I know my own teen years were pretty messed up -- always reaching for something that wasn't there.
