It takes time and a few shared ups and downs.

I fell for a pretty blonde at a fancy-dress Christmas  dance in 1957. She was truly horrible -- dressed up like one of the Belles of St. Trinians. We're still trying to work out whether it's love or infatuation but it's going to take a little more time.  Stay in touch and I'll let you know.

Infatuation is blind and it likes to stay that way. It doesn’t like to look at reality. When you’re infatuated with a person, you think that everything they do is just perfect. Love makes you think. Infatuation reaches a fever pitch in a short time, but then fades. Genuine love grows stronger with time and becomes the “perfect bond of union.

As Didgeri alluded to, time is the answer.

There's probably a more scientific/biological explanation, but to me it's all about sharing time together and realizing whether whatever chemistry or bond between you is strong enough to overcome the obstacles that life will through. If so, it's safe to call it true love.

It's time tested .. Only if the relationship holds fast through a test of time that you can be assured it's more than infatuation.

Love is not just a word (a noun)  .. Love is what you "do" (a verb).
