What are your thoughts now that the Supreme Court has stuck down bans on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional (as it struck down bans on interracial marriage in 1967)?

I think everyone has the right to marry anyone they want. The heart doesn't know racism or bigotry....

So true, Darling D. Here is a quote from Mildred Loving (one of the two principles in the Supreme Court case striking down interracial marriage bans) on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of that decision:
----------
...I am proud that Richard's and my name are on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about.

I really don't care, but I just think it's ridiculous. Like, why is it such a big deal NOW that same sex marriage is ok?? Homosexuals have been around FOREVER and all of a sudden we worry about it. It's just a popularity contest "Oh if my favorite singer is gay then I support it even though I don't necessarily agree with it..." I personally think marriage is between a man and woman. That's it, and I know "I'm gonna burn in Hell" for saying that but it's MY opinion. And no I'm not saying that I'm homophobic, I have a cousin who I call Ryan but to me she's still Amanda but I still love her for who she is. I just don't believe in the same sex marriage. Please don't bash on me for my beliefs

@Matt: This idea that simply disagreeing with someone is disrespecting their opinion needs to stop. It is the source of so much animosity in the world -- particularly the political world. If a white supremacist comes on here spouting his opinion that only whites deserve the privileges of citizenship, that is an opinion I disrespect (and would hope you would as well) because that disrespect is earned. However, I neither respect nor disrespect Jenn's opinion because so far it has earned neither. The one consistent thread that ties that white supremacist's opinion, Jenn's opinion, your opinion, and everyone else's opinion is that I believe and vehemently support their right to say it.

I understood your meaning so much better now, Well, I now know what you meant, But I crack these into two different topics, There's some opinions & behaves that count generally "Rude" & "Negative" . . The general rudeness usually get disrespected by most of people. I mean your example of white . . That's Racism, & I am against it so yea I would fight it & disrespect it but my disrespect would be only because their general rudeness. But yet they are also free to say what they wanted to as you mentioned.

Just like anything else, Any choice has agreement & disagreements. I have seen bunch of people saying today is a shameful day for America, but I can tell most people are happy, I being one of them.

Today is a proud & pride day, There's "Male" and "Female" but that doesn't mean we need to fall in love with opposite sex by force or stay alone forever .. Humans are full of emotions & humanity is built by feeling. We're alive to feel & the feeling can go beyond imaginations. An emotion doesn't follow any rule & it can fly anywhere with any form. So that feeling not necessarily fly up over an opposite sex, Loving is not guilt nor bad, We can love whoever we want, Love is a beautiful emotion, Love is energy, Love should be free to express & today finally is, Cause love is love, Loving is our right, And in our free land finally we can love freely.

Some say - There's Male & Female for a reason, To answer their words, I need to say, Humans aren't baby machines, to surely fall in love or be together with non love to just give birth to babies.

Equal marriage doesn't stop both sexes being together. Opposite sexes will fall in love & will enjoy their lives. But those who love differently than most people, they have the right to enjoy their lives as well & live & express their love freely without fingers being pointed at them.

I'm so happy about this decision & i would support it by anyhow. Love is Love. Equal Marriage is part of human's right & freedom. Now we have it. It's joyful.

Great move. The tide of opinion is carrying same sex marriage along with it and a decision by SCOTUS is going to have an impact far beyond US borders.

We're lagging behind in Australia and our Conservative, staunchly Catholic Prime Minister is using his considerable influence to delay any changes. He even rushed to the Supreme Court to overturn same-sex legislation in our Australian Capital Territory. (That's like DC but without the White House and the traffic.)

As a result, just a few weeks ago a group of leading businesses took a full page ad in a national newspaper calling on the government to get into the act. And right at the top of the page, surprisingly, was Ask.

Thank you, Australia, for not letting the U.S. be the last country on earth to recognize marriage equality.

There's been more and more pressure put on the parliament. So far the PM has refused to allow his members a conscience vote, insisting they vote along party lines. He is unlikely to survive next year's election (for many reasons) and things will change then. Perhaps sooner.

Either tax benefits for all unions or no tax benefits for marriages at all.

"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest
ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a
marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.
As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies
a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these
men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is
that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find
its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to
live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest
institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The
Constitution grants them that right. The judgment of the Court of
Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

It is so ordered."

I agree. But the government does have a vested interest in supporting marriage as one of the most significant stabilizing forces in any society. So I am glad to see benefits provided to all marriages rather than a repeal of those benefits to all marriages.

I just think the government should never have made these laws in the first place and finally corrections are being made. We are supposed to be the land of the free after all. Why should our government be in charge of our body parts if we aren't hurting anyone. ESPECIALLY when we are behind closed doors. Why didn't they ban threesomes or orgies or wife swapping so boldly as racial or homosexual sex? Because behind closed doors people should be free to love or touch in a consensual way without government intervention, except where they might cause harm to others, that should always have been beyond government authority.

It's about time this wrong was corrected. The government should worry about their own corruption instead of calling consensual love corrupt.
