Empathy relates to a feeling of 'belonging to' and a very important emotion in human relationships. It can also relate to  'Aesthetic pleasure, which is a notion that comes from the German philosopher philosopher and psychologist Theodore Lipps (1851 - 1914) and relevant to aesthetics. Further, its been applied to Architecture by Violet Paget (pen name) for Vernon Lee.
Empathisisng with someone else is not always easy, if we are unable to get a sense of how they are feeling. Mirroring the other person's  body language can help. Listening to the words they use - what we say is important, and if we give feedback using some of the other person's language; it can show understanding., If someone is smiling, it's no use disagreeing or frowning if we want to let the perrson, know that  we understand, We are with them: We care, etc.                  Eye contact can be important., A simple change of stance can make another person feel more comortable and avoid direct challenge.
If we are out of step with another person, we have to ge in tune, if we want a different outcome. Sometimes remarkably, if we feel there has beeen little empathy, and we make a few changes in our own mind and body communication, the relationship has a possibility of developing a stronger relationship.                    Catherine Adams
