The ring was originally given to Princess Diana, William’s late mother, by Prince Charles in February 1981. Giving the ring to Catherine, William said it was his intention that his mother, "didn’t miss out on today and the excitement”.
The striking ring is composed of an 18 carat blue sapphire surrounded by 14 smaller diamonds in a cluster style setting.
It was originally chosen by Princess Diana in 1981 from Gerrard Jewellers, the official crown jeweller since 1843. Some say the reason she chose this particular style and design of ring is because it was similar to her own mother’s engagement ring.
Kate and William married in April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London, watched by millions in countries all over the world. Diana and Prince Charles however, exchanged their vows almost 30 years ago at St Paul’s Cathedral. Kate walked down the aisle in a dress designed by designed by Alexander McQueen protégé, Sarah Burton. It has since been compared to similar style dresses worn by Grace Kelly and a dress worn in 2009 by Silvio Berlusconi’s goddaughter, Isabella Orsnini when she married the Belgian Prince de Ligne Edouard.
The now happily married couple met at St Andrews University in Scotland where Prince William was studying a degree in Geography while Catherine completed a degree in the History of Art.
