What's The Best Way To Convince Your Parents To Buy You A Cell Phone?

Approach your parents with all the ways they will benefit and how it will be good for both of you. My daughter convinced me with rationale thought. 1) It was a safety issue. She has it on her to call me on route from school and to home, between friends houses and home. 2) I can reach her when I need to and I don't need to dial through her friends. 3) We made mutual agreements on it's usage as well. I don't violate her privacy and she doesn't abuse the privilege of having it. 4) Tell them that you understand it's an extra expense for your parents and you will be mindful of it and will "try" to keep your conversations to after 7 at night (or whatever time the free calls start). This will show them that you are courteous of their added expense and mature enough to warrant the phone. Perhaps some extra chores around the house to make up for it?? Never know if some sugar on top might help ;-) My daughter was running around helping with everything but I slowed her down because it wasn't necessary. She has been respectful of our agreements and that was all I asked. Show them that you can handle it and you will respect the privilege and they just might give in. Good luck! :-) (PS. My daughter was in the 4th grade going into the 5th)

Im in 6th grade and i tried explaining to my dad the importance of having a cell phone. He isnt really sweet and will get mad easily. Im afraid if i ask him hell get mad. I try talking to my mom but she doesnt really get to choose. My dads the one who decides. I get A's on my report card and do chores around the house but he says i cant get one until im 16. I cant wait that long. I mostly want it for texting. Do you have to pay for texting??? What should i do??!!

If you're between the ages of 9-16, and you don't have a cell phone, chances are you want one. Here's a quick guide to accomplish the task of getting your own. And the other is either neutral or on your side. If one is neutral, then get them on your side. Don't wait until they go against you! Take them aside, and make the following points:

The time has come when you will be doing activities without your parents, it is an important safety issue. If something horrible were to happen and you didn't have a cell phone, what would you do. If your bus broke down... If you were stranded... If you had to get out of some place to avoid drugs or violence....
Not having a cell phone is a major embarrassment. Every time you have to ask to borrow someone else's, it's like stabbing yourself with an icicle.
You need one to coordinate event, friends coming over, study sessions, etc.
If your parents tell you to use someone else's tell them that if their parents were like you, they wouldn't have a cell phone.
Whenever you find yourself in a situation where having a cell phone would be a major advantage, casually and calmly drop a hint about it. "it sure would be nice if I had my own cell phone right now..."
If your parents tell you to use someone else's tell them that if their parents were like you, they wouldn't have a cell phone. Also say that if I can borrow someone else's phone then why can't I have my own?
Try making a deal. For example- If you got all A's on your report card, then your parents will get you a phone. Or, you will be honest 100% and never lie again. Something that your parents have wanted you to do. They might say "You should be doing this already without getting a reward." But if they do, remember- stay calm. Try making another deal. But you shouldn't make too many deals or else your parents will start ignoring you when you even mention deals. So be careful!
Once you have one parent on your side, you should wait for a while. No doubt late night conversations will be taking place. Don't eavesdrop, but if you can pick up on what's going on, it's a bonus.
Get inside the dissenting parent's head. Parents are people too. When they oppose you, it's generally for a good reason, and it's always fueled by love. Whether their objection is financial, practical (you don't need one), or a safety issue (they're worried about you contacting dangerous people), find out why. Then construct arguments against that, find cheap plans go online and find the cheapest plans that include what you are looking for in a phone, find safety features on the phones, collect arguments for why you need it, etc.
Behave responsibly and in a mature manner the whole time. Be polite, mature, and sensible. Do not be whiny or childish in any way. This will sabotage everything. You must show you can be trusted. If you betray this trust, then all will be lost.
Don't ask for too much. There is no way a first time cell phone user is going to get the coolest, thinnest, trendiest, most expensive phone right away. Don't even try it. This will give the impression that you have a childlike and unrealistic approach to this situation, and never whine or sulk.
Gauge your parent's emotions carefully. Use the parent who agrees as your advocate. Don't get in fights with the dissenting parent. When you judge the time is right, gently bring up the cheap plans you looked up. Advise them that many other kids your age got their first phones from ______.
Tell your friends to get AIM accounts so you can I'm them from your computer, which is free, unlike phone texting and IMing. Then tell your parents that you plan to use AIM so they know they won't have to face a huge bill because you've been sending 3000 text messages and 100 PIX messages a month.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Keep this issue at the forefront. Sooner or later a final decision will have to be made. However, if you get the phone, a sure way to sabotage your success is to lose it.
The phone you are aiming to get should not be too expensive and not include a data plan. If you are aiming for the more expensive and or a data plan phone the you should definitely offer to pay for a mass amount of the cost.
If all else fails, ask them for skype. It is 1.00$ a month or 1 cent a minute and you can get it for ipod touches psps and more!

I'm 10 I got my first cell phone just after my 10th birthday. I said that I really need one cause if we moved away I could have some way to talk to your old friends.Or say, well I can't always use your cell phones or the home phone cause someone else may be using it and so they think. Or as I did just sit around and never talk only talk quietly and concentrate on school soon they will think you are responsible and respectful and think you are deserving enough to get one.

I want one to. My mom is old fashioned and said I don't need one, wen I do I can have one. You could try doing more things like sports to show you need one because you'll often not have a parent around. Maybe you can get an adult your parents admire and ask them to try to convince your parents. I HAVE NO IDEA! I NEED ONE I AM SO ANNOYED!
I WAS PROMISED ONE THIS YR 6th GRADE

I am in the 6th grade and I don't have one either. I've wanted one since I was 10. (I was mature for my age:) Well, now I have been 12 for almost three months, and still no phone! I think I should get one though because I am responsible and I am a 4.17 GPA student! (I get A+s! I really don't understand why I shouldn't have  a phone! All of my friends have one (except one who is almost a year younger than me). Every time I try to ask or bring up getting a phone, or someone who has a phone, or something like that... My mom always says that I don't need one. (I only do this with my mom.) Then, sometimes I'll ask her why and she'll say, "Because you do not need one!" or "Beacause I say so!" I do try to bring up important reasons why I need one, but I still gt the same answer. It's really frustrating!

In my opinion, you should have a cell phone. It is not a luxury but the necessity. However, parents know the best about their children and they make decisions based on the circumstances and environment. You must respect their decision and humbly ask for the mobile. I am sure they would gift you one.

Maybe try convincing them by saying that your responsible enough. Just don't show it, do it! Hopefully, they finally come to see that when your in grade 7 or grade 8, they will buy you one. And don't they won't run out! There's plenty of phones out there and they get better and better every year! :)

Hope it helped you! :)

Search up good plans that are cheap and that satisfy you, then
make your self seem responsible enough to earn don't make them mad, don't whine (which seems to annoy them, a lot!) and do extra chores, explain why you want one and make a deal on what it will take for your parents to get you one (:
Don't expect the best phone ever, just be happy with what you have, at least you have one :D

Hope this helps you I am going to try it and I will tell you if it works.Good luck if you try it!

I got my phone when I was 11 (I'm now 12) how I got mine was when my brother was going on a trip to saint pierre...my mother wanted him to stay in touch (the trip was 2 days long....but his birthday was during those 2 days) ..now my brother is 2 years older than me so my mother said that I would be going on trips with school soon enough...so she let me get my phone! :D
My phone is on prepaid/pay and talk ...whatever you want to call it.....and I buy my card out of my own money every month,2month ,etc. So maybe if you can get your own money and go with prepaid, your parents just may let you get a phone. And if they don't...keep bringing up the fact that you are one of the only people in your class that does not have a cell phone.

At least your parents are going to get you one! My parents said I have to pay for it myself. And I'm always out, and gone, and it would be SO helpful to get a cell phone. But my parents say I don't NEED one.. But I really do need one. People I babysit sometimes have even said it would eairler to contact me if I had a phone! I've afford to do a million extra chore's, and yet they still say no. I've even asked my mom if she would just get more texts! She said no. I don't understand why they are being so unreasonable! I am 15, almost 16! It's make's me upset, that my paretns are so old, that they don't understand why I need one. So moral of this post, Be greatful your parents are goingto get you cell phone. I am 10 too but the best way to get one is to ask your parent/guardian if you can get a cell phone what works is if your in a really bad area like NYC or something like that then say "but what if something happens". Also go to like the news channel.com and find out what  has happened in your area if nothing has happened and your in a really nice area then say "but Ellissa gets a cell phone tomorrow!" oh my god and if you have an older sister or brother that annoys you badly and I don't mean like 1yr older than you I mean one thats like 15, 16 , 17 or 18 and says your only 10 you really don't need a cell phone and tries to convince your parents not to get you one then just say "your phone is a piece of poo!"

  Hope this helps!

They were both pay as you go. I needed a mobile because I told my parents it is something I needed, and not as a toy or game. I also do sports and the timetable shifts around, which is a added bonus for me to get a cell phone. This time round the phone was on contract the phone came free, but I had to pay £20 for it, but I worked out monthly bills came around to £11. My parents wouldn't pay, so I had to, every week I get £5 pocket money and £20 a week for helpng out at a car wash which is literraly 30 second walk from my house :). So I you really want a cool cell phone go on conract £5-£30 make sure though you pay for it, tell your parents ill be responsible with it. Worked for me :)

I think that if your parents don't want you to have a mobile then there is obviously a reason for it, they are not just trying to make your life difficult they might not be able to afford it or they may be worried or they might think that you have not shown enough maturity. Don't sulk or whine about it show them that you are responsible and perhaps offer to do odd jobs around the house for some pocket money let them know you will save up for it and let them see that you will look after. You never know you might get it as a birthday present

First of all in my opinion that is to young to have a cell phone but to convince them to, I have some tips.
1. Tell them all the pluses
This means like that if you get lost or something you can contact them. You are also getting older and will do things without an adult and they may need to reach you or you may need to reach them.
2. It can also be used as a second phone to the family
3. Promise and keep your promise you will not go over in minutes/texts

Most parents think kids are irresponsible as in leaving your homework at home or forgetting stuff.Try to be patient, like when your parents say " I'll get you a phone when its the right time" or something else, just work around the house(if you have pets, feed daily then your parents think your mature and responsible), respect your parents then probably they'll offer you a phone in the next few weeks

Same here. Im eleven and im going into 12 this summer. Im going to try to convince my parents by writing a 3 page or more essay. Something you can do is say ''i wont go over the minutes but if i do i will pay for it'' or say that youll buy a simple chep phone and as time passes you can get better and better phones. Dont start off with telling your parents you want a blackberry. Start by saying you want a razror something. Then youll end up with an iphone eventually!!!!!!!

I can't take a side. Your parents might have been having trouble with bills and don't think this is the right time. But I agree with you because if you were in and emergency you need a cell phone to be a hold of people and you need a good one. I would say either get the money itself and ask them if. Can buy it then have them pay for monthly payments if needed. You can be the money by community work so your helping the community and getting money for yourself. Of just be responsible and take action in things around your house and maybe the will see you r responsible enough to get one. Hope it works out well

Well what I did was the old fashion suck-up routine. And you really need to be a good kid also, just so when they ask you why you have an answer. And only ask for little things, before you ask, do more chores w/o being told. It took me 2 years to convince my mom to get me one, and I'm 12 going on 13. Good Luck on getting that cell phone. Your probably going to need it!!!

Hey I'm your age and its can be really unfair. I want a cell phone too because all my friends have cell phones too. Well my mom might get me a cell phone if I'm willing to sell my swing set in the backyard. If you have something that you don't really need and its fairly expensive then you can sell it. But also prove to your mom & dad that you are responsible and mature.

I'm 11 and I REALLY!!!! Want a cell phone too. I don't usually talk on the phone a lot. And I have an iTouch to hold me down for a while. But my older brother is 14 and has had a phone sense he was 10! But if you do talk on the phone a lot you could tell them, "I won't be on the phone as much." And I know this is like all the other answers, but tell them how responsible you will be with it. Maybe do a little extra chores, or better yet! Make them breakfast in bed or something! And if you have siblings, maybe be a little bit nicer to them when they are around! Then maybe after a few weeks/months, you should ask them again. I hope this will/has helped you.
Good luck!

Sorry sweetie but I think 10 years old is a little too young. This can still work though. Just offer to help around the house. Parents love having a little time off of chores. They will think you are responsible and mature enough to have a phone. Definitely do NOT beg for one everyday. Just bring it up in a conversation; maybe like saying "Yeah, Jenny was so lucky to have a cell phone or she'd be there all night!" But just don't push it or your parents will get annoyed. Good luck!

I don't see why you need to work hard to get a cell phone, you better get it right away. Its kinda like working hard for safety, which I think is stupid. If your parents say "no" to getting you a cell phone, they are inconsiderate and unaware of what could happen. My mom gets mad super easily and starts with me. I feel scared asking her because she might do something like yell or curse at me.

I know this is old..but I'm 13 and I don't have a phone yet..If you want a phone, try to do a plan..for example, Go join a sports team and tell them you have practice until 5:00..and say that how are you going to get home.. Than say ''If I have a cell phone, I can call you to come..because the schools office phone is not working and nobody on my team has a phone..'' THAN FEW DAYS AFTER YOUR PARENTS WILL BUY YOU A PHONE

I am 10 too. I have wanted one for FIVE years. I have wanted one when is was five, but that would never happen. I think the best way to get one is to act mature and responsible. Also be in a lot of after school activities. If you walk home that would convince your parents too. Also clean up after your parents. Like help wash the dishes. If your parents are watching a movie offer them a drink or something. Also always clean your room and the house and pick up after yourself. Do not ask for one. Trust me I have tried that and that has gotten my nowhere. So just remember think about the parents first than maybe you will get one.

I'm in grade 5, and I REALLY want one! Not many kids in my grade have one, but I have a lot of friends in different schools. I am still so frustrated by them not letting me have one. For my birthday, my parents got me a mac computer for my sister and I, (who's birthday is a day later) and I was so confused that they could buy us a 1300$ mac, and not a 100$ cell phone. Life is unfair! I know how you feel. Just hope for XMAS and Hanukkah and whatever. =(

I am 11 years old. I REALLY want a cell phone, but all I need is the permission. I am kind of shy and don't have the best relationship with my parents. How should I ask them if I could get one? Also, you should help with chores and off to put some of your own money into it.

I know how you feel. I'm 12 years old moving onto high school and I don't have a phone. All my friends have got one and all of the boys have one. I even asked my lil sis if she would be feeling left out if I got one and she didnt. She said she was alright with it. My parents keep saying its not a toy and what are you going to do with it. I try helping them and making them happy and I don't get it. Whenever we go shopping and I see phones for sale, I feel upset. This girl is 10 years old and shes got a phone that I want already. And she is 2 years younger than me. So, I'm living without a phone , very upsetting life, and I know how you feel.

If your parents say no, they say no there is nothing you can do 'bout it...but if you were a child in desperate need of a phone (for your own needs of course like the fun of texting :)) give them a list of reasons why you think you should have one. Like if you were lost in the mall or needed a ride from the movies what would you use to call them??? Tell them stuff like that and that should win them over.!!
P.s I am 12 in grade 6 and I am getting one next year for my birthday and I will be in grade 7....
But they understand why I want one so that is the agreement we made!!!
Try it out!!!it should work!!!!have fun trying!!!!

Well in your parents mind they may be thinking of getting you one but they wanted it to be a surprise if your birthday is near or something. But the main reason your parents aren't probably getting you one is because it may affect your school grades. They may be thinking that you are going to text during class or something. Try to get as many A's as possible and show your parents how smart you are and you won't fail even if you had a cellphone. Try making a deal with your parents that if you get straight A's on your report card you can have a cellphone. That's how I got my cellphone.

If you really want a cell phone, you should buy one on your own for... I don't know, a year, and then prove to your parents that you can be trusted. If you've been in any dangerous situations, or if you're not home a lot, that might persuade your  parents into buying one. You should be reasonable. If your parents say "You can have a phone when I get a new phone.", then just break their phone and say it wasn't you. That theory won't work if you are a horrible liar. I know my information is not great,  but I hope I could help!! Good Luck getting your parents to buy you a new cell phone. Thanks !    :)

I have the same problem and I'm in grade 7 and I don't have a cellphone yet. My parents said that I have to wait until I'm older. I promised them that I wouldn't call anyone just my parents and my parents said that I am only allow to text my friends when I get a cellphone. They don't want me to waste my minutes. So I think the best way to get one is, after school go to the movies with your friends for like a 1-2 hour movie and they will be worried where you are and they will understand that you need a cellphone then they'll get you one. :)

You should get an lg cookie if you do convince thm. I have it and it is amazing.

When your in 4-5th grade you want a phone the best way is you to have a reward, like medal in school. They will be happy and ask you what you want so the key is to be SMART! Good luck.

Sorry but I agree I have an 11 year old that wants a mobile phone and there is no way he is getting one. I think people have lost sight of the fact that 20 years ago we managed just fine without any of this stuff. I live in england and it is just commonplace to have mobile phones, cars, computers, tvs and yet when we were young (oh and I'm only 28) we felt privileged to have 1 computer and 1 tv and a phone that we could walk round the house with let alone having 3 or 4 cars a mobile phone each and a computer each. I do have a mobile but I use it for things I really need it for as I don't have a landline. I live 1 hour away from the nearest bus stop and we DON'T have a car and we deal just fine with that.

Also we had about 6 months of our life where we had to live in a caravan with 2 children a dog and 2 adults (and a 3 bedroom house worth of furniture) and believe me that really makes you appreciate the things you have. We had no washing machine so I had to wash everything by hand, most of our things had to go into storage as they just couldn't fit in the caravan, we woke up every morning to soaking wet beds due to a leak and we had to somehow try to have xmas. Sorry to lecture but when I had this 6 month spell I realised what it must have been like during the war for my granny and grandad and their 6 children and I will never moan again about wanting more when each and every one of us have so much we should appreciate already. And we've all become greedy wanting things we don't need we just want.... Children do not need mobile phones unless there is some kind of safety reason and so to my 11 year old I say NO you're not getting one..... And to you I say find out the actual reasons why your parents don't want you to have one in a nice calm way and really listen to their reasons without trying to persuade them into it. Sorry.

Everybody I know has a cellphone... I'm 11 and a lot of people ask me when I'm getting a cellphone and stuff. Ive asked my dad for 1 on my birthday which is in about 2 weeks. He still said no. My dad doesent even listen to me when I ask for a cellphone..... I feel really left out when I'm talking to a friend and suddenly his cellphone rings and he says wait a second I got a text..... Once when he finished texting he said he completely forgot to ask me what my phone number was and I felt really embarrassed to say that I didnt have 1..... The only chance I have to get a cellphone is on my birthday from my mom..... I think you should just wait and ask for a cellphone on your birthday or any other holidays you celebrate and show your parents how responsible you are.

Seems they have set rules and regulations for you and standards for themselves since they are not budging on this one have you done all that you can to show them how responsible you are keep showing them and ask them at a later time, right now everyone is feeling the pinch with many people losing their jobs its another bill they are probably not ready to deal with,or handle at this time,by then which is high school  you just might have a job to take over the payments, but its worth a try, give them some time and don't hassle them about it,and the next time you ask which should be at the end of the month you might, and I mean might get a maybe,or wait and see.
