People get engaged because it's promising that you will spend the rest of your life with each other. Also it's taking the relationship to the next level. I think traditionally it's pre-covenant commitment and allows time to plan the wedding, etc.

To show committment. If you are just dating, it is open-ended, but engaged is more definate, no other sex partners, no dating anyone else, planning a future together alone with each other.
