The generation gap is usually a period of about ten years in difference in age. This means they grew up listening to different music than you did, wore different types of clothing that you did and experienced different things than you did. For example back in the 60s it was a time for woodstock, drug experimentation, the Vietnam war and then along came the 70's and it was disco music, more information on the dangers of drug use and no more war. People were worried about their future. Then the 80's came a time for baby boomers and more mothers working. The difference that spouses face are a clash in feelings, different ideas about things, such as to how to rear a child. Different personalities but these are good things if you were just alike life would be boring you would have nothing to talk about.
