Basically it is a technique used for amassing statistic data. It also plays an important role in determining the total voting population in a democracy. The data obtained from census is widely used for research, business promotion and planning purpose. Even though the census gives positive information, this information can be used in the wrong manner if not guarded well. It can lead to abuses, politically or other wise, can cause problems for the minorities and start racism.
