Musophobia is a phobia or fear of rats. People suffering from this phobia try to get on higher ground like chairs, tables or beds for example when they see a rat. They may refuse to enter a room where a mouse was last seen and in extreme cases may refuse to enter the same premises. Symptoms of Musophobia can include extreme anxiety and anything associated with panic such as nausea, breathlessness, heart palpitation, inability to articulate words or sentences, dry mouth and shaking.

Treatments could include counseling, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, and Neuro-linguistic programming. The effectiveness of these methods is questionable.

Other unusual fears include Arithmophobia or the fear of numbers, Bibliophobia or the fear of books, Cibophobia or the fear of food, Deciophobia or the fear of making decisions, Geumaphobia or the fear of taste, and Phobophobia or the fear of fear to name but a few.

Musophobia is the scientific term used to describe the fear of mice and rats. It is also called murophobia. The word murophobia is derived from the adjective murine (which comes from Muridae, the family that includes mice and rats) and phobia, which is defined as a morbid fear of any object that affects the person more deeply at the psychological level.

Murophobia or Musophobia is more commonly associated with women. Women usually tend to panic upon seeing a mouse or a rat. Musophobia can be treated by undergoing psychological treatment and by using any standard method of treatment generally used to cure various types of phobias. In popular culture, there have been many jokes about elephants and their alleged fear of mice, though this is in fact a myth that has been shattered.

John Steinbeck wrote the book 'Of Mice and Men', which has spawned a popular spoof entitled 'Of Mice and Women'. George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' is a famous book whose plot deals with, among many other elements, the irrational fear of rats.
