If you are a first-time parent, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of "stuff" you have to buy and acquire for your new baby. Indeed advertising and fashion can lead you to believe that you definitely need all the gadgets and accessories, and this includes clothing.
However I will stress that you really only need a few essential items. Remember that baby will grow very quickly indeed, and that sometimes even newborn clothes can be too small if your baby above average size.
Recommended clothing for your newborn baby:
4/5 x bodysuits - the plain white variety for putting underneath clothes to keep baby warm.
4/5 x sleepsuits - long sleeved nightwear for when baby goes to bed.
4/5 x outfits - depending on the time of year your baby arrives, choose a set of outfits that you can mix and match easily. In winter go for trousers/pants and knitted sweaters; in summer your baby will look great in shorts and t-shirts.
4/5 x pairs of socks - girls may need a pair of tights also, for keeping them warm when wearing skirts and dresses.
1 x warm coat/fleece - even in summer the temperature can be too cold for baby without a coat.
3 x hats - if it is cool weather, buy fleece or knitted hats to keep baby's head warm. In summer, choose hats that will protect baby from the sun's rays and shield sunlight from her eyes.
It is not necessary to spend a great deal on your newborn's clothes - unless you really want to! As these first clothes will only last a very short time you may also want to find hand me downs (people will give you plenty!) which provide clothing without expense.
