It's one thing to lie to yourself and believe your own lies which is, in reality, re-inventing the story, but it's another to lie to yourself and not believe it - meaning that you know you're lying and you actually know the truth of the story.

For example, I could lie to myself and say that I really liked the movie Forrest Gump, when in actuality, I've never watched it. So, do I rewrite my history and now believe that I like the movie or do I go for what I know is true - which is that I've never watched it, so how could I really like it?
