The only way I would be put off is if he was married, had a girlfriend or gave off a creepy vibe.

I will be honest and say it really depends on the guy. If it seems sincere and they guy has always acted like a gentleman and was not my boss, I think it would be a lovely compliment. I have had a guy that was my boss that did something similar and it came off sleazy.
