Dear Zack,

This is strange...but it is Iowa.

Until 2010, I had always lived within 50 miles of the ocean, and there in the heartland (which I loved very much) I still felt almost like I could not breathe.

I worked to condition my mind and it got better. But then July 2015 when I got to California Bodega Bay...it was the most wonderful feeling of the freedom sea air, I was in tears.

Dozy...you also have that sense of stifling, not breathing fully when you are too far away from an ocean?

Oh yeah. I'm about 70 - 80 kms from the coast here, Virginia, but it doesn't take much more than an hour to get to a beach. I worked in the Sydney CBD until the early 1990s and used to go for a training run around the waterfront of Sydney Harbour every lunchtime. Lovely environment. Sometimes I'd pass a shop-front gym and see people in there walking on treadmills. I couldn't do that.

Oddball comment. Every day, hundreds of people ran the same route I did so it was easy to pick up a casual training partner. I asked one guy where he worked and he said, "The Opera House". That was interesting so I asked, "What do you do there?" And he said, "I sing." Not a bad job to have.

Being quite thoroughly oriented around small towns I had to look up Sydney CBD = Central Business District....sounds like rather a wonderful place, Dozy.

75 KM is about 47 miles...and that is about the distance I have always lived from the Pacific. You could get there within an hour.

Gator Blu above mentions how the (quite lovely) Lake of the Ozarks just doesn't do it, either...Iowa is bounded by two great rivers of this continent, the Missouri and the Mississippi...and for some reason, you just really 'need' an ocean...

I understand now how everything in the world  is related and dependent upon each other, even people..

When I figured that out, it helped me make better decisions that were more productive and meaningful, especially concerning my and my children's present and  future.

Americans! Being able to interact -- both here and on Ask -- with so many ordinary Americans has helped me to understand them in real terms.

Five years ago I couldn't even tell a.donkey from an elephant. :-/
