My counselor said that a women's shelter would probably turn me away because they usually take in mothers with their children. How come women's shelters say they want to help kids but they would turn away a single 16 year old?

Unless you are married most states consider you a minor and that is why they won't take you. If you are married then you have in many cases been considered emancipated and should take you. If you are looking for a women's shelter becuase you are trying to get away from your parents, that is not an option because that is not what they are for.

I would certainly hope a 16 year old is single.  The reason they wouldn't take a 16 year old is because that what parents/guardians are for.  If those people can't or won't take care of this 16 year old, that's what CHILD services is there for.  Women's shelters are for adult women, not single children.
