No first date movie, you don't know this man. All good ideas here. Yin has a very good one, about tell someone, I say tell a couple of someones and let him know you told family and friends.
No dark or isolated places far from your home.

Go to the mall and sit.
It is safer to stick with a dinner and a movie. In this way, you are surrounded by people. Do not isolate yourself. Better safe, than sorry later!

A coffee shop ie busy public place, and take a friend so she can sit on another table and keep an eye out for you.
I'd say go out for coffee, get to know him in person, then some ideas are doing a sport, visiting several shops, going to some type of game.

Since it IS first date and it was started on the internet, perhaps something very public. If it's warm where you live maybe coffee at a nice diner or coffee shop, and then miniature golf. How about a walk through a museum and have an ice cream sundae at a popular restaurant or Ice Cream stand . . . If it's cold, a well lit bowling alley, or if you are so inclined ice skating as possible activities.
First date should keep it lite and public, with opportunities to see if you're interested in a second date. We are looking for "Chemistry" first . . . Then we can get a bit closer and start descending into the layers of persona.
Slow and steady . . .
A coffee shop/cafe/bakery is always nice. Also, breakfast dates are surprisingly fun. Just maybe not for a first date.
Maybe instead of dinner and a movie you can try a movie, then lunch? If you see the movie first, it will give you something to talk about afterwards in case things get awkward.
