If you've sent a friend about 20 e-mails over the past 6 months, and you haven't had a word or approval, appreciation, empathy, or encouragement, would you say it's time to discontinue the friendship or just carry on holding out unsubstantiated hope?

Sometimes it's a misunderstanding. Once, I sent my friend about five messages and didnt get a reply. I went over to their place and we talked. Turned out she was just really busy.
You have to talk to them. In person would be better. Communication is important.

Have you checked the obits?  Have you dialed up?  Have you dropped by?  Have you checked with neighbors or mutual friends?  Have you emailed this question to your friend?

Well, it's disappointing; but, could be the friend really is busy especially if that friend is married and has children. Just call him/her and ask.

Well if they were a close friend and we kept in regular contact, i would figure something was wrong and call them on the mobile to see if they were alright. Some people have busy work and social lives and don't always email back right away.I'm notorious for that myself as my friends will point out and i prefer texting as it's quicker and more responsive. You can never be sure exactly why someone doesn't email back, so i would continue with the process just to find out what was happening.
