I had never thought of this as a phobia before.  I used to love getting mail.  And then after a time period of being without work and Money most mail became threats of lawsuits and any other legal jargon credit collectors could throw out and mail became something akin to "ignorance is bliss" .  Even though it's no longer a problem I still freak out when I see one of those Plain letters that could be anything from a solicitation to some long lost collection that never got taken care of.. I really don't deal with my personal mail at all. I don't open it.. I barely look at it.. And I get upset when someone suggests that I do.  The hubby is the official mail opener.  The really ironic part is that I am Accounts payable at work. I don't seem to have a problem with other peoples mail.  Interesting topic.

I also have a bad habit of ignoring my mail....I have a "junk" drawer that is filled with unopened mail, mostly utility bills which I pay online and don't need the actual bill itself. I don't feel in my case that it's a phobia because I don't have fear of the mail itself, it isn't something I view as dangerous but I feel anxiety about what it possibly contains and usually would rather not know. I also feel upset if someone mentions it and admit I'm actually hiding it by putting it in a drawer. I think it's because I know I'm not being organized and responsible and it's embarrassing, so I don't want my friends to know about it. I'm also a procrastinator then stress out trying to deal with things at the last minute. When there's no new mail in my mailbox, I feel like "no news is good news".

you are going to find this hard to beleive but you might want to sit down for this one.  These are one of the reasons I am on disability.

I have agraphobia  of telephone, mail box, front door

I have a fear of answering the phone not knowing what is on the other side, fear of getting bills in mail and fear of opening the door to see a man on the other side.

I have panic attack when I have to get in the car,  which  I have major attaks  I scream, cry, urinate on myself,  I have hit my husband while he was driving.  I have crabbed the stearing wheel and caused an accident,  I am a fricken mess, thats why I do not leave my house unless heavenly medicated on valium.  I could go on but not enough time or space.

I wonder if it has something to do with the "Anthrax" scare a few years ago...actually still going on but not as much. Everyone was told to be very careful opening your mail and home or work. I had a neighbor who also had some sort of "mail phobia", and she would always wear rubber gloves when she picked up her mail from the mailbox...

I hadn't heard of that one before. I had a look for it on the phobia list and couldn't see anything directly related to mail.

In a way I can see why such a thing could happen, if you have ever experienced money problems then you would know the feeling of dread you can get when opening letters from the bank for instance. So perhaps you friends problem stemmed from something like that, or possibly some other kind of bad news that she heard about by mail?

While trying to find an answer for you I also stumbled across this article I'm-afraid-of-my-mail which you may find helpful.

I hope you friend gets over this problem soon.
