Hi.  The black family in the American south did not exist under slavery
because they were split up before they came over from Africa on the
slave ships. If they were still together when they got here they were
split up at the slave auctions. Black families in the north were often
together working for families that needed servants. While many of the
families were employed by manufacturing, merchants,etc they remained
together as a solid unit. There were instances where slaves escaped in
the underground railroad and were reunited with there families that had originally been split up at the auction sites.
