Brighton has a large community of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals (abbreviated as LGBT). About 13 per cent of the city's population, or an estimated 35, 000 Brightoners belong to the LGBT community. In fact, Brighton is known as the 'homosexual capital of Britain'.

There are a number of organisations, including charitable institutions and social workers, who work actively to promote the rights of members of the marginalised community of homosexuals in Brighton. In addition, Brighton has several exclusive places that the LGBT community frequently gathers at. For instance, they have separate stores, which are colloquially referred to by the homosexual community as 'scene shops'. These shops specifically and exclusively cater to their needs.

The bisexual, gay, lesbian and transsexual community in Brighton organises a Gay Pride carnival every August. The annual Gay Pride carnival is a colourful event, during which the mood in Brighton is gay. The carnival-like atmosphere is one that attracts thousands of participants and spectators. It consists of a lively parade that passes through the city, followed by a party and fun fair at Preston Park.
