I think this very much affects our lives today! I know when my husband of 42 years gets home from work and I have a big meal on the table, both of us enjoy the evening more!

I hate to cook so for me to make something extra special is a real challenge. He knows this. So when I surprise him with a fresh made apple pie, or homemade soup with corn bread, I can name my pay so to speak.

Both of us own our own businesses, so by the time I get home most nights, it is easier for us to jump back in the car and to somewhere for a light dinner. But this, too, takes time and takes up a lot of the evening. So once in a while I go way over board and make a three course meal, and add music and candle light, and for sure I can see the direct line from his stomach to his heart. He is my slave for the night!

This old English proverb, some believe, has become outdated. There have been many new age modifications to the proverb. Some alternate endings to the phrase 'the best way to a man's heart is…' is through his mother; through the TV remote control; with beer; or even through sports. Robert Byrne opines that "Anybody who believes that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach flunked geography." Many are skeptical that "correct tasty flavoured food" as they put it, can capture a man's heart. While it doesn't have the same relevance as it did during our forefathers' time, at the end of the day, the proverb still holds true for a lot of men. There are numerous ways to a man's heart; food is just one means. A good meal in a lovely ambience has a magic of its own. Even Google, by providing free meals to all its employees five days a week, seems to believe in the power of this adage.

This covers much from the old time aspects of a real relationship between two people. It goes back to the times when a man did the work outside the home and earned the money to support his family, which often isn't the case nowadays.

However, the evening meal, as a family occasion, is a very important part of family life. It helps to bring a man down - or woman, for that matter - from the stress of daily life in the workplace; calms them down and shows them that there is still one place where they are appreciated. It is also one of the best social occasions within a relationship, and shouldn't be underestimated as such.

These days, it is important also for a man to be handy around the kitchen. More so because the number of single people are increasing in proportion, and you can't just rely on the microwave or your parents or wife (who may also be working) to do it for you. The fact is that there has always been more male chefs (and hairdressers) than women, so I don't understand why the kitchen could still be seen as a woman's domain. Perhaps in countries with more traditional views this may hold in some circumstances, but I think this is applicable for both man and woman these days.
