Staph infections are usually acquired in hospitals. Believe it or not, many of the nurses who work in the paediatric wards will have long finger nails and less than perfect hand-washing habits. A study done a few years ago showed this to be a significant source of staph in infants. Your premature baby is likely to be in the paediatric intensive care unit where they are somewhat more careful, I wouldn't worry too much.

If the baby has it, could it have been passed to her from the mother? When I was pregnant, I kept getting these weird skin infections under the arm, and they have yet to go away with antibiotics, my daughter was born premature, and after being in the intensive care unit for two weeks, she got sick. When a blood culture was done, it came out positive for a staph infection.
